Again, this is not an all inclusive list of yard and garden tools. It does cover most of the basic tools necessary for regular maintenance. While many home owners have acquired a large number of other gardening tools over the years, the basic list here should be enough for the average startup gardening and care maintenance project.
The benefit of shopping for the tools yourself is that you can find the best prices. An additional benefit is that you will learn more about each tool and its respective manufacturer. So, review them all. Whether searching locally or on the internet, you will learn about quality and prices. Both will help you determine the right tools for your lawn care needs.
Basic Gardening Tool List
Spade or Shovel
A basic garden necessity is a shovel or spade. The first has a scoop blade and is best used to move dirt and garden soil around; the latter has a flat blade great for cutting edges, digging, and dividing plants.
The edge of a spade should be kept sharpened for clean and efficient cutting that will cause the least amount of damage to plants.
Forks
Forks are useful for turning and aerating compost and breaking up lumps of soil - and digging potatoes. The cheaper ones are often not strong enough for heavy soil, so go for sturdiness instead of price. They are also handy for lifting piles of fresh weeds into barrows.
Chipping Hoe
A chipping hoe is a handy tool for getting rid of small weeds. The Dutch or push-hoe is slightly more user-friendly as the action required to use it does not jar the neck and shoulders quite so much.
A three –pronged hoe can be useful as it goes in deeper than a rake and so can drag out weeds that get buried under the soil.
Rake
A rake is also a basic requirement for the garden. The strong rake with the flat head and sharp metal prongs is used for smoothing a garden bed and getting out the last of the lumps and weeds. The plastic rake is used to gather leaves and grass clippings only.
Wheelbarrow
A wheelbarrow is another handy tool for the garden. One time there was only the one-wheel style similar to that used by builders.Nowadays you can purchase a pull along barrow with two wheels. It is lower to the ground so you don’t have to lift as high and seems much easier to use – a point to consider for those whose muscles aren’t really strong.
Hand Pruners and Pruning Saws
When you buy secateurs make sure the size fits your hand. A pruning saw may be useful for pruning trees and larger shrubs, while secateurs are for plants like roses.Pruning saws have a narrow curved blade that fits between stems or branches and easily and cuts them as you pull the saw backwards. There are also telescopic tree pruners that are made especially for those high jobs.
Shredders
More recent additions to the gardening world are shredders. Wonderful for disposing of waste and creating mulch for the garden they will save you the cost of buying mulch and disposing of waste.Composters
Composting is an age old fascinating process. In these day when we are more aware of the environment and recycling processes, the art of Composting is awakened again.
